JO-SUP Health was established with the intent to give back to the community. We donate 10% of our sales profits to support charitable organizations.
JO-SUP Health compounds its herbal tinctures in limited quantities in a commercially licensed facility under the direct supervision of a licensed Pharmacist. This enables us to provide expert guidance and counseling on our tinctures and natural supplements. Our goal is to focus on helping to improve the health of our patients with evidence-based practices.
Our Elderberry Tincture is made from locally sourced fresh organic and responsibly grown American elderberries in southwest Missouri. This vertical integration allows us to inspect, verify, and control the quality of our herbal tinctures. Missouri is considered the elderberry capital of the United States.
Seven years ago, 2 friends started a hobby farm on 18 acres inside the city limits of Joplin, MO on the edge of Turkey Creek and Historic Route 66. The farm is on the site of the original Joplin Brick Company and is centered between 2 of Joplin’s historic landmarks.
On the North side is the Rothenbarger house, which is also known as the Civil War House. Solomon Rothanbarger, an immigrant from Pennsylvania, arrived at Turkey Creek in 1839. He staked out a homestead at the age of nineteen on the creeks' banks. In 1850 he left his wife and farm and was off to California to seek his fortune in the gold rush. He found success and returned a year later with enough money to finance a burgeoning construction and brickworks business which became Rothanbarger and Sons. He also set out to build a brick mansion for his family. Construction of the Rothanbarger House started in about 1851. Today, it is one of the oldest standing homes in the Joplin area. Recently discovered Rothanbarger family correspondence indicates that the house was originally a one-story home and that a second story was added sometime after the Civil War. The house was the site of several Civil War events. It was used as a field hospital on multiple occasions during the war by both the Federals and Confederates. It could house up to thirteen soldiers at once.
Mrs. Rothanbarger died in the middle of a harsh winter, but the ground was frozen solid so her grave could not be dug. The family had no choice but to keep her in an upstairs bedroom with windows open until the ground thawed. Mrs. Rothanbarger waited two months to be buried. There have been several accounts that she still lingers there. The 166-year-old historic home still stands North of Florida and Newman on Turkey Creek.
On the south side is the Shifferdecker house that was established by Charles Schifferdecker who was the proverbial “self-made man.” In 1869, the poor 18-year-old left his family home in Baden, Germany to seek a better life in America. He started out in the brewing business in Joplin in 1876 on Turkey Creek. The Turkey Creek Brewing Company served the small mining town of Joplin at the time. Though his career in brewing was successful, young Charles made his fortune in mining and banking ventures. By 1887, the wealthy businessman even went to the White House for a private audience with President Grover Cleveland.
We started this adventure during the summer of 2018 at a St. Louis Cardinals baseball game. During our trip we decided to start a hobby farm to grow a variety of berries and promote permaculture learning and naturalist teaching.
